The Crown presented its final arguments as to why and how a Nova Scotia man carried out the first-degree murder of Emilie Maheu in October 2018.
Brandon Smeltzer, 27, of Bayside, N.S., heard Crown attorney Isabel Blanchard argue in favour of having him convicted of one of the most serious offences a person can commit, in her closing submissions to the court.

If convicted, Smeltzer faces life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for at least 25 years for the murder of 26-year-old Maheu. Although he denies planning the events, Smeltzer confessed to killing the mother of his infant daughter days after her body was discovered in a South Glengarry cornfield on Oct. 13, 2018.

CORNWALL Lawyers spent Tuesday arguing which testimony and evidence the judge should consider when deciding the fate of the man charged with murdering Emilie Maheu.
Defence counsel Paolo Giancaterino spent Tuesday morning fighting the admission of some witness statements that supported Crown attorneys Elaine Evans’ and Isabel Blanchard’s arguments that the accused planned the killing of 26-year-old Maheu.

CORNWALL Lawyers in the murder trial over the death of Emilie Maheu spent the day Monday arguing over how much weight should be given to hearsay evidence.
Crown attorneys Elaine Evans and Isabel Blanchard began the proceedings Monday by arguing Judge Laurie Lacelle should admit some testimony from witnesses as evidence. If accepted, the oral testimony from the witnesses will be accepted as truthful and have a bearing on the outcome of the trial.
