the historic to thetic coast to coast winter storm is clobbering parts of california with heavy rain and snow. icy roads sending this big rig swerving off the road in bakersfield. the first snowfall in the city since 1999. fox weather correspondent nicole valdes has more. reporter: good morning. we re just about an hour outside los angeles. 4200 feet in elevation, and you re looking at more than a foot of snow piled up here behind me. in the town of mount baldy, this is an area that s going to be digging out for maybe another day as we re expecting much more snow to fall, several feet here by the end of this storm. that blizzard warning remains in effect til this afternoon, and closures and travel are going to the remain including the grapevine, i-5 still closed. no word on when it ll reopen. california highway patrol trying to push all of the snow and ice off to make it safe to drive, but it s not just the snow. lower elevation areas like los angeles with this snow actually turned i
want to show you sort of the accumulation of the snow. if it s not snowing, it s usually always raining. we ve had a little bit of a break the last couple of hours, but a lot of the rain that we saw yesterday is now freezing. this truck here, for example, just a few moments ago was stuck. to be fair, my producer s car was also stuck so we ve been dealing with a lot of the snow and shoveling everything out. but it s not just the snow and the rain, it s also the wind. there s about 120,000 people without power at the moment. some of the most affected areas, we are talking about 75, 80-mile-per-hour winds. you talk about the 8 feet of snow in the higher elevation areas, 7, 8 feet of snow. in the lower elevation areas, 3 or 4 feet of snow. scientists we talked to said this could be the single event of snowfall that is the largest in southern california history. so again, we re just not used to
elevation areas, even 3 or 4 feet of snow. a lot of drivers stranded throughout california because of what we re experiencing. here are some of those drivers. we heard, like, over the radio saying, hey, a snowstorm. i think it was a winter advisory or something over the radio. we were like oh no, then all of a sudden this blizzard came. we didn t know where we were, didn t know where to go, didn t know what roads were safe. i didn t even know it snowed in california. it s pretty, but it s like why are you here? this is supposed to be a warm state. reporter: yes, it s pretty. we have seen children and their mothers playing their snowball fights. but it is dangerous and inconvenient. there s about 120,000 people all over the state without power at the moment. we re seeing some of those power trucks trying to get out of here. it s even difficult for them to get out and work. that s what we re seeing all over the state, everyone

miles-per-hour. a look back at some of those peak gusts, seaside park new jersey had gusts upwards of 65 miles-per-hour. and it only takes gusts up to 65 miles-per-hour to cause some significant damage, which is why we saw the coastal flooding and problem of power outages due to downed trees. for the rest of tonight, concern about the cape of massachusetts and the islands. we will see that threat for high gusting on shore winds shifting its way northward up into maine during the overnight hours. again still concern about those gusts to near 60 miles-per-hour. farther off to the north, it is a snow problem. we re seeing that rain-snow line centered across the higher elevation areas in northern new england up into maine. seeing snow that s accumulating. seen temperatures in that direction that are below freezing, but notice farther off to the south, temps are in the 40s and 50s. that milder air is going to work its way northbound and that will change things over to rain in these areas th
