Is the Free State ready for a third wave?

In the week ending 24 April, the Free State had the second-highest incidence risk of South Africa’s nine provinces behind only the Northern Cape, according to the National Institutes for Communicable Disease’s latest Weekly Epidemiological Brief. The incidence risk, a measure of people’s risk of contracting Covid-19, also increased marginally in the province compared with the previous week. Of the 7,655 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the country in the week ending 24 April, 1,436 (18.8%) were in the Free State. Only Gauteng reported more cases in that week. It is not only case numbers that provide reason for concern. According to the South African Medical Research Council’s latest Weekly Mortality Report, the number of deaths from natural causes in the Free State and Northern Cape was “concerningly high” in the week from 25 April to 1 May (the most recent week for which they report numbers). They estimate that there have been just less than 8,000 excess natural death

Technology vital to successful vaccine rollout

Eckart Zollner, social observer To achieve the 60% target deemed necessary for herd immunity, Africa needs to vaccinate 780 million people out of a population of 1,3 billion. In South Africa, 40 million people need to receive vaccine. While South Africa’s vaccination rollout plan is currently on pause, frontline healthcare workers are still receiving the vaccine as part of the Sisonke medical study. Once the government has secured the necessary doses to restart the programme, no time must be wasted in rolling out these lifesaving shots across the continent. However, achieving herd immunity will be no small feat. This will require the use of the correct cold chain and storage management, including temperature monitoring and alert technology, to ensure that vaccines reach even the most remote parts of Africa safely.

WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Premier Alan Winde said in a media statement today, that he warmly welcomes the news that the number of recoveries at old age homes in the Western Cape continues to increase. According to the statement: I warmly welcome the news that the number of recoveries at Old Age Homes in the Western Cape continues to increase. These residents are at high risk of severe Covid-19 illness, and so this extremely good news. I would like to join Minister Sharna Fernandez in thanking all our Old Age Home facilities for the role they have played in saving lives, and to urge them to assist us in registering as many residents as possible for vaccination. The Covid-19 vaccine has been rigorously tested internationally and locally, and offers excellent protection against severe Covid-19 illness and death. It is safe and it is effective, and it will help us finally end this pandemic.

Paperless vaccine rollout strategy brings data management to the fore

Apr 29, 2021 South Africa has taken a paperless approach to the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccinations, with the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS) being used to store and process patient information. By Hemant Harie, MD of Gabsten Technologies EVDS also tracks these vaccines and the logistics processes around their delivery. While this system should offer a number of benefits over a more manual approach, not least of which is preventing loss of the vaccines data, it does bring a critical need for data management to the fore. The health records created by the system contain not only confidential medical information, but many elements of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as well. All data must therefore be adequately managed, stored and secured across the entire chain, to prevent compliance breaches.
