Muscat: Music composer AR Rahman’s time with producers such as JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg made him realise that his idea to develop his recently released film 99 Songs was a good one.
The legendary composer lived in Los Angeles for about six years, after he won two Academy Awards in 2009 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, the latter of which was shared with Indian lyricist Gulzar, for Jai Ho in Slumdog Millionaire.
“Post-Oscars, I lived in LA for almost five or six years from 2009 to 2015,” recalled Rahman, in an exclusive interview with Evita Lewis of TFM, the radio channel of Times of Oman. “The life I lived here (in India) was very closed – from the studio to the airport – but when I lived there, I had more time to do other things.
Zindagi mein dekhne se zyada mehsoos karna zaroori hain.
Aur music
humein mehsoos karna sikhata hain”. This line in 99 Songs effectively sums up the film. This is a film in which you can actually ‘see’ the music. You see it when a young Jay, denied a toy guitar by his father, flies a kite, but riffs on its string like a guitar. You see it when an older Jay (debutant Ehan Bhat) runs his fingers lyrically on the keys of a piano as he faces off in a musical jugalbandi with an old friend. You see it at the end when Jay and his girlfriend Sophia (Edilsy Vargas) are reunited in a frame that resembles an opera. You see and feel music soaring, pulsating, life-affirming, heartbreaking in each of the 133 minutes of 99 Songs.
Who are Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas? Meet the cast of A.R Rahman s 99 Songs!
The writer and producer in AR Rahman has finally resulted in the release of the much awaited 99 Songs.
The script for the movie had reportedly been written back in 2011, and when Rahman established his production label in 2013, the film was in the works. The movie is supposedly following the flow of a musical, and given the Oscar winning composer s background, it isn t surprising. What s actually surprising are the fresh faces leading the cast. The lead actors Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas are both newcomers and next to nothing is known about them.

I recently read a comment on YouTube that perfectly summed up A. R. Rahman s other-worldly music; A.R. Rahman is not a name, it s an emotion. Over the past few decades, music lovers have been blessed with Rahman s intricate love letters to music and what if the tunes were given a visual stimulus, spearheaded by
