A MAN who created a walking route to remember 13 villagers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War has been awarded the British Empire Medal. Hugh Maclean Vernon, 73, was named in the New Year s Honour List for services to the community. It was for the role he played in setting up the Eardisland Memorial Walks, created to remember the lives of 13 men from the picturesque village near Leominster who died in the war between 1914 and 1918. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the list, which came as a surprise to Mr Vernon, who himself 22 was in the army.
Herefordshire CBA celebrate identity HEREFORDSHIRE County Bowling association celebrate their 75th Anniversary this year and are having a busy time playing many invitation matches, including one against the English Bowling Association. Herefordshire CBA was formed on May 10, 1928, at a meeting in Hereford Bowling Club of seven clubs, Hereford, St Martin s, Ross-on-Wye, Leominster, Castle Green, Kington and Ledbury. There was an addition to their number in the following year when Eastnor became affiliated. There are now 18 clubs affiliated, with the addition of Bodenham, Brimfield & Little Hereford, Bromyard, Bulmers, Eardisland, Kingsland, Wellington, Weobley, Wiggin and St Michael, of Shrewsbury. St Michael requested affiliation as crown green bowls is dominant in their area and they prefer to play flat green.
FIVE people from Herefordshire have been recognised in the New Year Honours List, including a college head. Ian Fryer Peake, former principal and chief executive of Herefordshire and Ludlow College, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education He was at the helm of the college, formerly Hereford Technical College, for 17 years. He retired earlier this year when David Williams took over. There s also an MBE for George Arthur Somers Hervey-Bathurst. Founder of the Ben Bathurst Memorial Trust, based in Eastnor, near Ledbury, he has been recognised for voluntary service to armed forces personnel and to their families.
