A COUPLE who met on a beach in Shanklin will celebrate 50 years of marriage this weekend. Ian and Jean Cunningham are toasting their golden wedding anniversary today (Saturday), having met while Jean s family were on holiday in the seaside town. Ian was a third generation longshore man at Small Hope Beach and Jean s family had hired a tent and deck chairs for the summer. Romance blossomed and on January 30, 1971, they married in London where Jean had grown up before settling together on the Isle of Wight. The couple have lived in Shanklin for the entirety of their married life. They had five children: daughters Dyan, Nadine, Lindsey and Heather, and son Andrew. Sadly Andrew died at the age of 17 from Muscular Dystrophy.
