The California Department of Public Health has handed San Francisco independent agency Duncan Channon a uniquely challenging and consequential project: lead a $40 million Covid-19 vaccination public education campaign in California.

Background: The purpose of the “Tell Your Story” campaign for the California Tobacco Control Program was to encourage those addicted to nicotine, both smokers and vapers alike, to begin or continue their journey towards a nicotine-free life. With the spots leading to nobutts.org, We wanted to unearth the experiences of people most targeted by the tobacco industry, including the Black community with menthol cigarettes, the LGBTQ+ community with false messages of support, as well as older White men who were fed decades of imagery associating smoking with masculinity and success.

The reasons to quit smoking and vaping are more obvious than ever amid the global spread of a deadly virus that, in large part, wreaks havoc on the respiratory system. It’s likely very few smokers need any reminders about the inherent health risks. Breaking such an addiction isn’t easy, however, particularly with the added anxiety in such stressful times.
