Arts and Culture Jazz is often called “America’s classical music,” but a 77-year-old man in Germany has spent most of his life debunking that claim, with formidable success. Few in the general public recognize the name Manfred Eicher. In the jazz world, however, he is regarded with reverence. His record label ECM, based in Munich, has transformed the landscape of contemporary jazz over the last half-century, and proves it year after year by winning polls, earning awards and accolades, and perhaps most surprising making money with music that other labels wouldn’t consider releasing.

In 2019, Fortner earned recognition in multiple DownBeat Critics Poll categories, winning first place in Rising Star Piano and Rising Star Jazz Artist. 

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, busier than ever, is on justice mission

As a woman in jazz, Terri Lyne Carrington has spent her long, storied career notching milestones and breaking boundaries. Now, the much-decorated drummer says she’s out to challenge an entire system. Carrington, the Boston-born sensation and long-distance artistic director for Detroit’s Carr Center, will feature prominently at Sunday s Grammy Awards. She and her group Social Science will perform as part of the Premiere Ceremony, the pre-broadcast show where the bulk of winners are announced. And their album “Waiting Game” will vie for the Grammys best jazz instrumental album  seven years after Carrington became the first and still only woman to win that category.

World-renowned trumpeter Dominick Farinacci took to the auditorium stage Monday evening as the performance was livestreamed outside the pavilion and in area homes. Charming and self-effacing, Cleveland’s Dominick Farinacci was joined by elite drummer, Ulysses Owens Jr. and his working trio, Jonah Pierre on piano and Thomas Milovac on bass. “This is actually the first time the three of us have ever played together, earlier today at 1:30 p.m. It is a great testament to what incredible artists they are,” Farinacci said.
