PVTA lands $7.2M grant for energy-efficient vehicles >Published: 6/30/2021 1:56:15 PM NORTHAMPTON – The area’s public transit system will soon be home to eight new battery-electric buses, thanks to a $7.2 million federal grant. State and local officials announced this week that the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) received the grant to help it lower emissions by replacing some of its gas-powered buses. Once the new energy-efficient vehicles arrive in 2022, the PVTA will have a total of 23 electric buses in its 180-bus fleet. The authority has a goal of cutting emissions in half by 2050 and hopes to receive more financial assistance to help it reach that goal. The authority serves 24 cities and towns in Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin counties.

Juvenile bystander wounded in Springfield drive-by shooting Updated 10:54 PM; An unidentified juvenile was shot and wounded Friday afternoon, the apparent unintended victim of a drive-by shooting near the intersection of Worthington and Armory streets, and city authorities are complaining about judges releasing firearms offenders on low bail or personal recognizance. “I am so irate,” Mayor Dominic Sarno said Friday evening. “The continued coddling of these gun-toting, gang-banging repeat violent offenders would lead to a tragic event such as this,” he said. “An innocent juvenile being shot.  I hope and pray for good health and a speedy recovery for this unintended victim. No innocent victim or their family should have to go through such a traumatic event.”

Springfield Easter Bunny Hop makes sure kids have fun even in pandemic Updated Apr 03, 3:35 PM; Posted Apr 03, 3:35 PM 5 The COVID pandemic has changed a lot about kids lives in the past year, but one thing hasn’t changed - holidays are fun, and a bunch of people at the Elks Club on Tiffany Street made sure that this Easter was still fun for kids at a drive-through Easter celebration Saturday afternoon. Called the Easter Bunny Hop, The Elks, the Springfield Police Department’s Forest Park C3 Unit and Springfield Together organized the reverse parade. While mom and dad drove the family car, the kids were showered with Easter eggs, candy, toys, and surprises passed out by Elks volunteers, police officers, teachers and furry mascots, including Elroy the Elk and The Springfield Thunderbird’s own Boomer.
