On November 9, 2023, a Humboldt County jury found Shawn Patrick McMahon, age 51, guilty of first degree murder for killing Benjamin Thomas, age 41. The jury also found that Mr. McMahon personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, causing Mr. Thomas’s death.
Judge Kelly Neel also issued a protective order for several of the threatened parties: District Attorney Stacey Eads, former District Attorney Maggie Fleming, District Attorney Investigator Martin Morris, 2nd District Supervisor Michelle Bushnell, 1st District Supervisor Rex Bohn, former Sheriff Mike Downey, Sheriff William Honsal, Fortuna Police Chief Casey Day, her former attorney Kathleen Bryson and DANCO owner Dan Johnson. In the misdemeanor criminal complaint filed against her, Aunna Bollmann is accused of threatening to kill Bohn, Fleming and Honsal.
