Stimulus plan will help Milwaukee low-income residents get tax credits

Last year, when she filed her 2019 tax return, Nyvonne Stevens got a combined $3,500 back from the federal earned income and child tax credits. This tax season, she could get double that from these and other tax credits expanded under President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID relief package signed last month. Stevens already has plans for the extra cash. “I am actually trying to buy a house,” said Stevens, a Milwaukee mother of two who is going through an ACT Housing program that helps low-income residents purchase rehabbed homes. “That is why this money is so important to me. I need to put something in my savings that would push me forward.”

Commentary: How Black activists aided the labor movement

Commentary: How Black activists aided the labor movement Dave Kirven It s an opportune time to reflect on how Black activists helped shape the labor movement.  Most notably was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 when he spoke in support of 1,300 sanitation workers who were on strike for better wages, working conditions and union recognition. He helped show how the labor movement was also about human rights. But it didn’t start out that way. In 1850, Frederick Douglass helped to organize one of the country’s first Black labor unions, the American League of Colored Laborers, in response to the difficulty that Black workers had in joining white-led unions. In 1869, the first national Black labor union, the Colored National Labor Union, was established and paved the way for future Black-led labor organizations.

Then, Harding s husband looked at her.  He had conviction in his eyes, she recalled. We have to get the vaccine because we are African Americans in the medical field, he said to her. That was my confirmation, Harding said. Vaccine distrust A disproportionate number of them are from minority communities. Black Americans are 1.1 times more likely to contract COVID-19, nearly 3 times as likely to be hospitalized, and nearly twice as likely to die from the disease, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hispanic and Latino individuals as well as American Indians and Alaskan natives also are disproportionately likely to be infected, hospitalized and killed by the coronavirus.

Letter: Reader responds to Bath letter writer

Letter: Reader responds to Bath letter writer Share RE: Diane Robinson of Wiscasset’s letter In your recent letter you accuse one of Maine’s newest citizens of not knowing anything about history or racism (“Columnist needs lessons in history, racism,” Jan. 15). I think it’s fair to say you don’t know anything about Abdi Nor Iftin. Personally, I much appreciate his views and welcome his voice in our paper. He decried the violence we’ve all been witnessing on our streets recently, which honestly, on what grounds can anyone disagree? Black people dying in our streets at the hands of police is hardly something to be proud of. White supremacists boldly showing up with weapons, ready to kill and intimidate: Is that not racism to you?
