Moves to monitor fishing in Gulf of Guinea May 6, 2021 Mr Seraphin Dedi The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), an inter-governmental organisation, which focuses on the fisheries sector, has set up a Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Center (RMCSC). This is to enable the country to effectively monitor fishing and its related activities in the Gulf of Guinea. Scheduled to be launched on May 12, 2021, the centre among other things, would co-ordinate regional and joint operations at sea, and patrols to identify vessels operating without authorisation as well as build capacities of stakeholders in the fisheries sector.

Govts must support free, independent media — UN Secretary-General

705 The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Mr António Guterres, has urged all governments around the world to do everything in their power to support a free, independent and diverse media. According to him, that was the only guaranteed way of combating misinformation and disinformation in an era that inaccuracies and falsehood in the media space was rife. In a message on World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), commemorated yesterday, the secretary-general underscored the importance of reliable, verified and accessible information, emphasising that: “Free and independent journalism is our greatest ally in combatting misinformation and disinformation.’’ He said as had been seen during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises, it was the journalists who had helped the world navigate through the overwhelming plethora of information and helped deal with false, dangerous information.

World Press Freedom Day climaxes today

Amoh 30.5k Shares 705 An awards ceremony and adoption of a communique will climax this year’s global commemoration of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in Windhoek, Namibia, today. The climax follows six days of deliberations by journalists representing various countries and other stakeholders who have convened in the Namibian capital to commemorate this year’s event and also mark the 30th anniversary of the WPFD. To be known as the Windhoek + 30 Declaration, the Global Conference, in adopting the communique, will call for an urgent need to address the threat of extinction faced by local news media around the world, a crisis worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
