EU Launches €20-Million Programme For 5,000 Green Jobs

  The European Union (EU) and its development partners, with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), last Tuesday launched the ‘Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana’ (GrEEn) project in Kumasi. The €20-million project aims at promoting green, circular and climate-resilient local economies and is projected to create more than 5,000 jobs. It is mainly financed by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) for Africa, with contributions from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). The project is targeted at the youth, women and returning migrants of the Western and Ashanti regions who will be trained in green businesses and given financial support to set up their business.

Picture: ESTHER ADJEI The European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana, in collaboration with Fashion Connect Africa, a fashion enterprise, has donated 10,000 reusable face masks to four non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for distribution to vulnerable communities in the Greater Accra Region. The gesture formed part of the support of the EU to Ghana in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). At a presentation ceremony in Accra yesterday, the EU Ambassador in Ghana, Ms Diana Acconcia, said the donation was to promote the use of appropriate and standardised reusable face masks to help curb the spread of the virus and to mitigate the effect of used disposable masks on the environment.

Ghana receives €9 7m EU grant to improve access to power in Sub-region

The grant will also support power transfer capacity from the South of the country up to Burkina Faso The European Union (EU), through the French Development Agency, has approved a €9.7-million euro grant for the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to boost infrastructure works on the interconnection line between Ghana and Burkina Faso. A joint press statement said the grant was expected to increase electricity access in Northern Ghana and exporting capacity to the sub-region, especially Burkina Faso. The EU grant facility will be used to finance the upgrade of an 18km long 161kV transmission line located between Ahodwo and Anwomaso substation in Ghana’s second largest city, Kumasi.

EU Supports Energy Sector With Additional 9 7 Million Euros

The European Union (EU), through the French Development Agency- Agence Francaise Development (AFD) has approved a 9. 7 million Euros grant to Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to boost infrastructure works on its Kumasi-Bolgatanga Transmission Project. The aim of the project is to enhance and upgrade electricity supply and access to the Northern Regions of Ghana. It will also boost export of power to the sub-region under the West African Power Pool (WAPP), commencing with Burkina Faso. The grant was co-signed by both Ms Diana Acconcia, EU Ambassador to Ghana and Ms Anne-Sophie Ave, French Ambassador to Ghana and Mr Christophe Cottet, Country Director of AFD and Mr Jonathan Amoako-Baah, Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, both signing on behalf of their respective institutions.
