Palestinian journalists covering Israel’s brutal war in Gaza have been named as Laureates of the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, the organisation announced Thursday May 02, 2024.
The UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize was awarded to journalists in Gaza on Thursday 2 May in Santiago, Chile, as part of World Press Freedom Day. Nasser Abu Baker, President of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) and Vice-President of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), received the Unesco prize on behalf of his colleagues in Gaza.
World Press Freedom Day on May 3 highlights the importance of press freedom, established in 1993 by the UN General Assembly. It marks the sacrifices of journalists like Jagendra Singh, Rajdeo Ranjan, Tarun Mishra, and Gauri Lankesh in India. Globally, journalists like Guillermo Cano Isaza, Daniel Pearl, Marie Colvin, Daphne Caruana Galizia, James Wright Foley, and Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya faced tragic ends while reporting.
