Some COVID-19 vaccine providers in Luzerne County had numerous appointment slots available Wednesday, but you wouldnât know it by checking the stateâs online provider map or most-recent vaccine distribution file.
Checking the state Department of Healthâs vaccine provider map against some local providersâ appointment websites showed that the departmentâs map doesnât always list providers that have appointments available, which could make it more difficult for people to schedule vaccinations quickly.
For example, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital had open appointment slots on its website for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and well into next week, and Albertâs Pharmacy in Pittston listed open appointment slots on its website for Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) has launched a new program designed to vaccinate more residents and staff at long-term care facilities.
Under the program, the department will help pharmacies at long-term care facilities secure vaccine doses the federal government is directly allocating to “group-purchasing organizations,” including GeriMed, Innovatix and Managed Health Care Associates.

During a virtual news conference on Thursday, DOH Executive Deputy Secretary Keara Klinepeter said the long-term care pharmacies will partner with one of those groups to get vaccine doses. The department will help expedite that process for pharmacies.
