WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - The Watauga County community is mourning.
They lost two of their first responders who were killed last week while responding to a call.
Mount Vernon Baptist Church was used last Wednesday as a staging area during an hours-long standoff that ended with two Watauga County deputies dead.
Sgt. Chris Ward and Deputy Logan Fox died after they were shot responding to a welfare check near Boone last week.

Protesters Rally For Transgender Rights
(Asheville, NC) Two proposed bills are being protested against by transgender youth supporters in Asheville. WLOS-TV says hundreds of people marched for a rally in downtown yesterday against the Save Women s Sports Act and the Youth Health Protection Act. A board member with the group Youth OUTright W-N-C said the proposals could erase years of working for equality in the transgender community. It s likely the legislation won t make it to a vote by state lawmakers this session.
Funeral Services Announced For Fallen Deputies
(Watauga County, NC) Funeral services for two fallen western North Carolina deputies are planned this week. Sergeant Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox were killed during a welfare check at a Boone home last Tuesday.
