SHARE An animal rescue group is offering a Dh10,000 reward to help find those responsible for a heinous act of animal cruelty in Umm Al Quwain in which a dog had its front paw chopped off. Members of Stray Dogs Centre UAQ told of their horror after finding the dog in immense pain last week . They said the stricken animal, who they named Roman, was subjected to abuse on another level beyond anything they had witnessed. Another dog, given the name Apollo, was found nearby with multiple cuts that are also thought to have been caused deliberately. These abusers need to be found and these cases thoroughly investigated

As has been widely reported, six people – all women aged under 50 – among the 6.8 million given the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have suffered rare blood clots called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). In response, the US, European Union and South Africa have suspended the vaccine’s use while they investigate the side effects, which have caused one death and left another person in a critical condition. It echoes problems with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which has also been linked to very rare CVST cases.

Students do better in exams when taught online, UAE study shows

For many students it was their first experience of taking courses online, the study . . taking engineering, pharmacy or business courses in English, or law, education or communication in Arabic. The performance of students in the first two terms of the 2019-2020 academic year, when courses moved online, was analysed. With face-to-face teaching, 38 per cent of students achieved a semester grade point average between 3.0 and 4.0, whereas with distance learning, the figure was 49 per cent. In their paper, published in the International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning , the researchers said the improved performance may be the result of “the use of innovative technologies and digital resources in distance learning”.
