In 1997, nearly five million Lego pieces spilled into the ocean off the coast of Cornwall, England. The pieces, many of them coincidentally sea-themed, almost immediately started washing ashore and 25 years on they still appear. Tracey Williams walks the beach in Cornwall several times a day, and finding the plastic building pieces has opened her eyes to the other things that wash ashore from the oceans. She’s written about her finds in her new book, Adrift: The Curious Tale of Lego Lost at Sea.

On this fateful day in 1997, the Tokio Express was battered by a massive, 28-foot rogue wave off the United Kingdom's southwestern coast. The force tilted the cargo ship en route from Rotterdam to New York by 60 degrees, causing it to drop 62 containers into the sea. One was filled with about 5 million colorful LEGO bricks!
