no, joe. and i think that training is far too over used in terms of this conversation. police officers receive a copious amount of training. what we re talking about and i ve said this before, and i ll say it again, is a culture issue. regardless of the level of threat involved, police make decisions in part based on the level of accountability for those decisions. and we have not previously seen a high level of accountability for police taking actions that adversely effect black people and black bodies. so as that culture begins to shift and we re still at beginning of it because i want to point out, we might not be here but for the public pressure and the video. you take away one or both of those things and we may have never heard of the name patrick loyola. so we have not come as far as we need to go. that being said, police have been trained. they know how to de-escalate
and there are also a number of legal efforts from those directly affected here to at least begin a path toward some form of accountability. jim, poppy? omar jimenez, thank you for your reporting on the ground. jim? joining me to discuss, chief jimmy perdue of the north richland hills police department in texas, also president of the texas police chiefs association. officer, good to have you on this morning. thank you, jim. good morning. first, i want to get your perspective as someone with years in law enforcement in the state of texas. there were more than 4,000 gun deaths in texas in 2020, that s up from just under 2500 in 2005 when you became police chief there. from your perspective, why? why the increase in gun violence? i think you have seen a proliferation of guns all throughout the entire country and the ability for people and the willingness for people to use them more frequently and more willingly. it is more than just access. it is more of a culture issue
erased? will some politicians who created misinformation be allowed back on, et cetera. twitter has now become a platform where there s misinformation and in some cases danger and he has got to bring clarity to what he plans to do, especially as many of us who use the platform have been targeted on the platform. there are so many pieces out there in the hinterlands, maybe lying out in mars, that we need to find out about. there s more questions than answers right now, leigh ann, what question do you have? i want to know if he s going to add an edit button. that s a very good one. but speech and twitter especially, it s been part of the political discourse now. it s become a culture issue, a wedge issue politically, not only in congress but in the public as well. so it s going to be an interesting journey. i think there s a bigger problem that when we focus on the personalities of people like
it s more of an issue for me. cancel culture issue is not about. who are you getting on? i am not going to tell you who my guests are. you ll be nicking them for your own podcast. who is failing to get access to high profile media that you would like to have on your programme? i would love to getjk rowling on, for example, the author who has been appallingly vilified and there has been a massive attempt to cancel her, it has been unsuccessful because she is extremely wealthy and can look after herself. but the abuse that has been meted out to her, for effectively defending women s rights, has been a complete disgrace. you are not surely suggesting that iij rowling contacted media, she wouldn t get on the mainstream media? but she had a lunch with women recently, many of them who have been cancelled. the university professor kathleen stott, we can discuss how she was treated at her
and now you have a different show, you are not on itv, you are on rupert murdoch s programme, you are rehearsing at the moment, i assume. i noticed earlier you said it was to un cancel those who have been cancelled. so who are we going to hear from that cannot get in the media elsewhere? cancel culture issue is not about. who are you getting on? i am not going to tell you who. i am not going to tell you who my guests are. who is failing to get access to high profile media that you would like to have on your programme? i would love to getjk rowling on, for example, the author who has been appallingly vilified and there has been a massive attempt to cancel her, it has been unsuccessful because she is extremely wealthy and can look after herself. but the abuse that has been meted out to her, for effectively defending women s rights, has been an absolute disgrace. you are not suggesting thatjk rowling wouldn t get
