Auckland Mayor Phil Goff is defending public health officials who allowed the Big Gay Out and Prada Cup to continue yesterday despite knowledge of positive cases.
Thousands attended the Big Gay Out in Auckland s Coyle Park, including Goff, who learned of the cases while on his way there.
Goff received a phone call from director general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield late on Sunday morning and was advised public events should stay open.

A spokesman for Ending HIV said members of the LGBTQIA+ community told event organisers they felt unsafe with Corrections staff attending an event that celebrated their community when there is “clear evidence of historic and ongoing harm to incarcerated members in the prison system”. Corrections said it was “hugely disappointing” for its staff who were looking forward to attending and representing their organisation. New Zealand AIDS Foundation chief executive Dr Jason Myers said it was a complex and emotive situation and Corrections had acknowledged it had work to do to gain the trust of the rainbow community.

The Government is providing $4 million to services that provide mental health support to young members of New Zealand s Rainbow community.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made the announcement before her appearance at the Big Gay Out at Auckland s Coyle Park this afternoon.
