We re Looking At Changing Times : Bronx Democratic Party Backs More Women For Office

arrow Andrew Freedman Home on October 29th, 2020 during early voting. David Cruz / Gothamist In the run-up to the June primary, the Bronx Democratic Party is backing more women candidates for the New York City Council than ever before, which could tip the scales for the first time toward a female majority of local Bronx legislators. The shift reflects the changing face of politics, which throughout more recent years has seen more women run for office. For Marjorie Velazquez, who sought the party s endorsement in 2017 but was snubbed, greater female representation means addressing important topics such as sexual harassment. When you re not including all of us at the table, like women, it means something, Velazquez told Gothamist/NYC, adding that women lawmakers can offer a different perspective when it comes to discussing issues such as sexual harassment, which can help craft tougher laws against it.

New York City Council Unveils Legislation To Provide Civil Penalty Relief For Small Businesses

Reply March 1, 2021 New York, NY – City Council s Small Business Committee is holding a hearing today at 1 p.m. on two bills providing civil penalty relief for small businesses, who for too long have been subjected to onerous fines from New York City. After conducting a year-long review of the extensive network of rules and regulations that apply to the City s small businesses, the Council drafted legislation to permanently update more than 180 laws and to provide immediate relief to businesses by refunding unnecessary fines. Subscribe Small businesses have waited years for meaningful relief from fines. I m proud that the Council took the lead in doing a truly comprehensive look at our laws to see how we can help. This has been a problem for decades, but there s a renewed urgency now because of the pandemic. These businesses are suffering, and it s on us to do everything we can,

City Doles Out Historic Sum Of Taxpayer-Funded Campaign Cash

arrow Ersler Dmitry / Shutterstock The New York City Campaign Finance Board released more than $37 million in matching funds to candidates in the races for mayor, comptroller, borough president, and New York City Council to date, representing the largest amount ever doled out in CFB history. Much of that was driven by the sheer number of candidates in these races, with more than 400 people opening campaigns, but also by the CFB’s 8-to-1 matching funds program that stretches funds from small-time donors, weakening the might of political action committees (a.k.a. dark money). On Tuesday, the CFB met to announce its disbursement of funds at a public meeting after staffers audited financial records they obtained by campaign treasurers for the months of July 2020 to January 2021. While campaigns typically claim to have reached the threshold needed to qualify for the funds, they still must be vetted by CFB auditors to ensure candidates meet the criteria needed to qualify for

Can A Bronx BP Candidate s Endorsement By A Divisive Police Union Help Him Win The Race?

arrow Councilmember Fernando Cabrera is running for borough president. Gerardo Romo As the NYPD and its ethos fall under greater scrutiny by lawmakers, Councilmember Fernando Cabrera distinguished himself from the rest of the Democratic candidates in the race for Bronx Borough President by recently accepting the endorsement of the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), one of the NYPD unions whose leaders have proven to be a thorn on the side of Democrats. It s a rare endorsement of a Democrat from a police union that regularly leans Republican, most recently throwing their support to GOP Representatives Nicole Malliotakis of Staten Island/Brooklyn and Elise Stefanik in the North Country. The two went on to win the November election.
