The Huskies survived a scare from the visiting Firebirds after some self-inflicted mistakes gave Southern Nash a huge opportunity to win a game Heritage was largely in control of. A shanked punt gave Southern Nash the ball inside the Heritage 10 with under three minutes to play, and a one-yard touchdown score by Terence Raspberry brought the Firebirds within a point.

Cardinal Gibbons advances to the 3rd round with tight sweep over Apex Friendship Tags: By Joel Bryant, HighSchoolOT reporter The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders managed to sweep the Apex Friendship Patriots in what was a highly competitive second round matchup. Apex Friendship entered the matchup 14-0 and Gibbons was 13-0. Gibbons won the three sets by a combined eight points. It was clear that the teams were evenly matched from the beginning. Gibbons and Friendship traded blows early, with neither team gaining a greater than 2-point advantage through the first 40% of the opening set. Gibbons went on a run to take a 16-11 lead and force an Apex Friendship timeout. Apex Friendship came out of the break strongly and eventually took a 23-22 lead. Friendship reached a 24-23 advantage but wasn t able to find the final point to take the set. Gibbons ended on a 3-0 run to take the opening set 26-24.

High School Athletic Association s winter volleyball postseason kicks off on Tuesday. Each bracket has 32 teams, down from 64 a year ago, and was sorted with a random draw between teams with equal seeds. Those factors have led to some interesting first-round games that typically would be second-round or third-round games. These are 15 to watch closely (online, for most of us) on Tuesday night. 2 killed, 1 seriously injured in Christmas Day head-on crash in Johnston County

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) Two people were killed and one person was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Christmas night in Johnston County. The crash occurred just after 8 p.m. on NC-96 near Davis Road north of Highway-231 in the Corinth Holders community. Jimmy Bryant, 78, of Zebulon was driving southbound when he crossed the centerline and hit Fernando Mendoza, 44, of Zebulon, according to State Highway Patrol. Both drivers died at the scene. A woman passenger was also pinned in the wreckage in Mendoza s car. She was removed and rushed to WakeMed hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
