Blazing a trail for post-COVID meetings, Singapore recently hosted the
Global Broadcast Centre for the Professional Convention Management Association’s (PCMA)
Convening Leaders 2021 conference. Highly revered as “the event for event professionals”, this year marked the first time the event was held out of North America in 64 years. Close to 300 people met at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, while also connecting with PCMA’s global community online.
The two-day conference is the latest in a series of ‘pilot events’ in Singapore, where safety measures for hygiene, contact tracing, crowd control and logistics management have been implemented and fine-tuned.
PCMA brought together more than 3,000 attendees in an unusual experience befitting the COVID era.
Primarily a virtual event, PCMA’s
Convening Leaders, held Jan. 11-15, also featured several hub cities where event professionals could enjoy an in-person experience while taking in the education.
In a remarkable moment, a short musical performance was livestreamed from Singapore where 300 persons were in attendance before a general session.
Halfway across the world in
Las Vegas, Caesars Entertainment attempted a different, but perhaps even more ambitious experience. Seeking to spotlight its new crown jewel,
Caesars Forum, the hotel and entertainment giant hosted about 74 attendees for what amounted to a three-day FAM Trip befitting one of the industry’s largest events.

I was excited to attend PCMA’s Omnichannel Convening Leaders event last week. Having attended more than 20 of PCMA’s Annual Meetings over the years (both in person and virtually), I expected high energy, experimental delivery and great content. I wasn’t expecting to connect with my friends or to feel the same high I get from the in-person meetings. Those expectations were largely met.
The Great: Global Reach and Main-Stage Experiences
Applause to PCMA for engaging the global business events community and for the diversity of speakers and formats offered during CL. The Marina Bay Sands stage and production in Singapore were sharp, cool and well executed. We in the U.S. still have a lot to learn from our friends in Asia, so congrats to them! This, by design, was the most truly global event in our industry and the participation from so many outside the U.S. is refreshing and welcome.

we talked so much about the house speaker, about the majority leader in the senate. and we have heard reports about meeting at the white house. the broader question, ed, how involved is the president in this compromise we re hearing about now? well, you know, the white house has been quite frustrated in recent days. the questions, the republicans keep pushing, the notion, the narrative that the president has been sort of checked out, has not been heavily involved. their view at the beginning of the crisis, he was convening leaders here, basically every day. but after speaker john boehner walked out of the talks twice, and basically said look, congress is going to work this out. the president was trying to stay out of the way. as a result, you now have kevin mccarthy, the republican whip in the house on fox news sunday with bret baier this morning saying he believes the president has not been involved enough. take a listen. speaker boehner has been the leader on this in changing w
