session of congress on january 3rd. there s a lot on the line here, in particular for kevin mccarthy, who would like to be the next speaker of the house. there s two complicating factors for mccarthy when it comes to taking serious action against george santos. there s the simple margins between republicans and democrats. there s only a few seats that separate the two parties. it you were to lose or force george santos to resign, that would be one less republican vote on a lot of key issues. the other factor is that mccarthy is jet to lock up the speaker s race. he needs 218 votes to do that. there are at least five republican members of the house who said they will not support mccarthy for speaker. because democrats get to vote in the race, that makes the situation more complicated for him. and santos has pledged his vote to kevin mccarthy. so he needs him to be seated in the congress on january 3rd if he s to be assured that speakership. it s likely that george santos will be seated
