The Hillcrest Academy boys soccer team will try to get back on the winning track today when they host Cedar Valley Christian. Hillcrest enters play with a 1-2 record after being shut out by Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Thursday 2-0. On the season the Ravens are led by Will Kolck with three goals. John Hughes, Dominic Bouse and Johnny Diaz each have one assist and in goal Aiden Krabil has made 28 saves with a 70% save percentage.
Cedar Valley Christian comes into the day with an 0-4 record. They were beaten by Center Point Urbana 8-0 on Monday. The Huskies have yet to score a goal on the season, being outscored 28-0 across their four matches. In goal, Braydon Taylor has 45 saves and a 71.4% save percentage. The Ravens are 4-0 all-time against CVC including a 4-0 shut out win in 2019. Hillcrest has outscored the Huskies 17-1 combined in their previous meetings. The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union/Lone Tree wrestling team traveled to Centerville Saturday for the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invite. The Wildcats were 10th of 14 participating teams with their score of 73.5 points. Creston-Orient-Macksburg won the team title with 201.5 points. The Wildcats crowned a pair of champions on the day with Lane Scorpil taking the title at 113lbs, winning the championship match by fall over Connor Fiser of Bondurant-Farrar. Chance Malone was at the top of the podium at 285. He won the title by fall over Logan Green of Clarinda. Other top finishers included Gerardo Orozco fifth at 160lbs and Trent Wilkerson fifth at 182lbs.
Highland High School was the center of the wrestling world in southeast Iowa Saturday as the Huskies hosted their annual Gary Curtis Invitational. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks posted the best team score of any area squad with 139.5 points, in fifth. South Tama won the tournament with 173 points. Mid-Prairie crowned three champions on the day. Vinnie Bowlin brought home the title at 160lbs with a fall over Kaden Shirk of Wilton. Cael Garvey took the title at 195 with a fall over Johnathan Lilly of Wilton and Josh Wallington was the champion at 220, beating Logan Wright of West Branch by 16-5 major decision in the title bout.
