Turk Pettit continued his outstanding play in the NCAA Tournament with an opening-round 68 to lead Clemson to a tie for 10th after the first round of the NCAA National Tournament at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale Arizona. The Tigers had a team score of seven-over-par 287 on the par 70 layout that measures 7,289 yards in length.Clemson is part of a log jam in the 30-team field with the 287 score. Wake Forest, Arkansas, SMU, and Illinois are all tied with the Tigers for 10th with the same 287 score. Only three shots separate the 11 teams who are between eighth and 17th place.Clemson has an early tee time for the second round, as Head Coach Larry Penley’s team will begin play off the 10th tee at 6:32 a.m. Pacific time, 9:32 a.m. on the east coast. Clemson, S.C. Clemson will begin play in the NCAA National Championship Tournament on Friday (May 28) at Grayhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona as the number-four seed in the 30-team tournament.
Larry Penley’s final Clemson team will have a veteran lineup, as all five players have experience in the NCAA National Tournament. The lineup includes four seniors and one junior, although two of the seniors have indicated they will return for next season by taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to all players due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clemson Tied for Fifth Entering Final Round of Kingston Regional
Kingston Springs, Tenn. Zack Gordon and Turk Pettit both had rounds of two-under-par 69 to lead Clemson to a five-under-par team score of 279 on Tuesday, and a tie for fifth entering the final round of the 2021 NCAA Kingston Regional at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston, Tennessee.
The Tigers are tied for fifth with Charlotte at 566, two-under-par, for the 36 holes played over the last two days. The top five teams after Wednesday’s third round will advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona starting May 28.

Tigers Seventh after First Round of NCAA Regional
Kingston Springs, Tenn. Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley hopes a late eagle by senior Turk Pettit will jumpstart his team in the second round of the NCAA Kingston Regional at The Golf Club of Tennessee on Tuesday morning. His team shot three-over-par 287 in the opening round on Monday and stands in seventh place after the first day.
Only the top five teams in the 13-team field will advance to the NCAA National Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona May 28 to June 2. Penley’s number-one regional seed and the number-three national seeded team are a manageable six shots off that fifth-place cutline after 18 holes, but the Tigers will have to play much better over the last 36 holes.
Clemson Begins Region Play on Monday Morning
Clemson, S.C. Clemson junior Zack Gordon will hit the first shot of the NCAA Kingston Regional at the Golf Club of Tennessee near Nashville Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. eastern time. The Tigers are in the first group off the first tee as the top seed in the regional and will play with #2 NC State and #3 Vanderbilt on Monday.
Thirteen teams will play 54 holes on the par 71 course in Kingston, Tenn. over May 17-19, with the top five teams advancing to the NCAA National Tournament at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
