and who else is there? phil keating, he s live in miami with more. tell us a little bit about this helicopter. reporter: yeah. it s so fast and it s explained by coaxial rotors that work with contra spin design. that means you ve got two sets of rotors and rotating blades on top of the helicopter, one going clock wise, the other going counterclock wise, and in a traditional helicopter, you have one rotor, and those blades going forward are pulling the helicopter faster, but once they get around the nose, they create drag slowing it down and keeps the traditional standard helicopter going no father than 150, 160 knots an hour. so this has two, so that doubles the speed and takes the speed up to 250, and sikorsky says this particular test prototype broke the world record for helicopters hitting 250 knots or about 283 miles per hour just within the past couple of weeks. jenna: so what s the market for this kind of helicopter? is it market like a military
market? we ve got military interested in it or civilians like us? reporter: absolutely, both. both markets are applicable, but first and foremost, they re going to market to the pentagon. the russians already have a helicopter that looks very similar to this with the coaxial rotors, known as the ka-50, also known as the black shark. it s got the two rotors and the heavy gunships, it s kind of like the u.s. army s version of the apache attack helicopter. sikorsky s also introducing its raider, and it s going to build two of these, and it says it could seat six soldiers fully equipped, and it could also have some 50 caliber gun or missiles attached to the side. jenna: all right. cool stuff, phil. phil keating in miami today. jon: we have been talking about the fallout from npr s firing of analyst juan williams over his controversial comments on fox
