The Rotary Club of Kirksville held its regular Sept. 6 meeting off-site at ATSU Museum of Osteopathic Medicine. Museum Director Jason Haxton spoke about the museum which received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in July of 2022. Rotary Club members were offered self-guided tours of the exhibits.
At the Aug. 30 Rotary Club of Kirksville meeting, seven new members from the 2022-2023 Rotary year were recognized along with seven older members including Larry Whitney, the longest serving member with 53 years of service as of Aug. 1, 2023. He is pictured with Club President Melissa Stuart.
The speaker at the Aug. 16 Rotary Club of Kirksville meeting was Dr. Baydon Hilton who spoke about skin cancer prevention and self checks. Dr. Hilton said there are more skin cancers than any other cancers. Every 52 minutes someone dies of melanoma and one in four individuals will get skin cancer in their lifetimes. In 1935, the lifetime risk of melanoma was one in 1,500 but it is now one in 30. Pictured from left are Dr. Hilton, Club President Melissa Stuart and Dr. Lloyd Cleaver. Dr. Cleaver said that Dr. Hilton joined the staff of Cleaver Dermatology this week.
The Adair County Ambulance District (ACAD) recently hosted members of the Kirksville-Thousand Hills Rotary Club for their weekly meeting. ACAD personnel provided information to the members on stroke awareness, CPR, and first aid for bleeding wounds. The Rotary members were able to ask questions and get a hands-on feel for administering aid using ACAD training equipment. The ACAD professionals providing the information were Kat Probst, chief executive officer of ACAD, Bill Peterson, chief medical officer, and Jason Moss, lead training instructor. The Rotary Club of Kirksville-Thousand Hills meets on Thursdays at 7 a.m. at the Kirksville Aquatic Center, 801 E. Mill Street. Anyone who would like to learn more about the club or Rotary International, a worldwide service organization, is welcome to attend.
