Seated roundabout and wheelchair swing welcomed by campaigners

DISABLED children will soon be able to have fun in a playground with their sisters and brothers. Specialist play equipment is being installed at play areas in Winsford Town Park and Over recreation ground in the coming weeks. Winsford Town Council confirmed plans to buy a seated roundabout and wheelchair swing at an open spaces committee meeting. The announcement has been welcomed by crusading resident Charlie Parkinson who has been campaigning to give disabled youngsters the same leisure opportunities as able bodied children. Grandad Charlie said: I am absolutely delighted that we are finally looking after our less fortunate people.

Campaigner welcomes new disabled play equipment in Winsford parks

A swing, boat, train and climbing frame should be in place by the end of March. Winsford Town councillors have set aside £10,000 towards the total cost of £24,000 to buy, install and insure the equipment. Members hope to secure £4,000 from Cheshire West and Chester Council and further funding from other organisations and grants. This is one of three projects members approved at a meeting on Monday evening to improve the town s parks and open spaces. The play area at Leaf Lane will be renovated and work is set to be carried out at Wharton Allotments. Cllr Lyndsay Barwell, chairman of the open spaces committee, said: I am happy that we are now in consultation about the accessible play equipment.

Plea for more investment in Winsford Town Park

Tony Hooton urged councillors to invest in more maintenance to look after the town centre flagship amenity. Speaking during the open forum at last night s Winsford Town Council meeting, Mr Hooton praised volunteer John Malam and the Friends of Winsford Town Park, who regularly weed, plant bulbs and tidy litter. My main concern is the small amount of resources put into keeping on top of maintenance. As fast as John and his gang are working, more weeds are growing. It is meant to be a prestige park for the town. I m afraid it doesn t look like it. Winsford Town Park meant to be a prestige park for the town Picture: Jo Conchie
