transparency that builds trust rather than dissipate it, and stay at the task as long as it takes to know that you once again have that relationship. and i don t think it s one thing. i think not only is it all these things, i think it will take all of us, all of us, the work to do it. and i will just say, whil i know ipra was created in 07, was not seen as not a solution to the problem. it is clear to me when you look at laquan mcdonald and other instances and they go way back in history and they re current, that none of the things we ve done in the past have measured up to the scope, the scale, and the consequences of what needs to be done. and i believe as a city, i believe as a police department, and i believe as your mayor, we are at a reflection point and
doing the things necessary and making sure is that you re held accountable for the results. and so i will be judged by that, as i was for the last four years, and for the next four years, to make sure i do what s necessary and important for the city s future. i m sorry. why not fire the officers who falsified their report? why not [ inaudible ] why not do something? well, it s funny for you to say you re asking on a day in which i m brought in, one is, we have a new superintendent, we have a new head of ipra. there s an investigation right now, going on by the u.s. attorney on the event and all the parties involved as it relates to laquan mcdonald. when i m given the chance and the material, i will take action and make things right if they are wrong and hold people accountable for this. where are those officers now? you say that you welcome this
and well, to get the evidence and whatever statements to the local procedures in a more timely fashion. that s going into effect january. i welcome that. reporter: when did you get all the information from ipra on this case? how did we get it? reporter: when did you get it. it came in piecemeal. it came in when they had it. lynn had to keep asking and stay on top of them to give us, example, the witnesses for months. reporter: didn t original reports say he turned and fired at them? the original police report on this? no. you know what, there might have been, actually, we have been seeing this more and more, a certain spokesperson who would go out and say things at the site of a police shooting. i won t rely on any of those statements. reporter: are you concerned that maybe your investigation could be impacted any way by a
politician and so the appearances that the city just wanted the laquan mcdonald case to go away and that this case got swept up in it, that the video was held on to, the mayor s office is saying that is what their legal counsel advised them to do. then you have a settlement that takes place right before the actual runoff election. there is so much here that just doesn t look good, quite frankly, for the mayor s office. they are now scrambling but he also opposed the idea of a federal investigation. now it s happening. he has to get on board. and you also have a situation where you had lawsuits that would have produced discovery where these videos would have likely come out anyway. they are being essentially forced to release videos they could have simply released and could have been open and transparent about these cases in the beginning but they didn t. and they did it in the midst of a re-election. it s a problem. they are much more on defense. lastly you have the other announcem
year to release the videos? you know, because ipra was doing the investigation and again, as i said, i can t get ahead of the evidence. i have to wait for ipra to give me what they have and it has taken them that long. it took them eight months to find two witnesses. reporter: do you think the police reports that showed real discrepancies between what you see on the video, were you aware of those discrepancies in the police report? are you going to do anything about it? you know, i believe the u.s. attorney confirmed that this morning, we, again, looking at this police case, they are complex and very thorough. the only thing i can say is what he said this morning. the investigation continues. he has not wrapped up his investigation. that s all i can say about laquan mcdonald. i think that s the last question. thank you. we have been listening to anita alvarez, the cook county state s attorney, lay out basic information their office has vetted as they are looking at
