From the Archives: Novelist Ernest Hemingway Dies of Gun Wounds

Sun Valley, Ida.    Ernest Hemingway, 61, the bearded American novelist who gained fame writing of death and violence, accidentally killed himself Sunday while cleaning a shotgun, his wife said. Mrs. Hemingway, the “Miss Mary” who accompanied him on his world travels, was asleep upstairs. She was awakened by the shot, found the body and summoned a doctor to their home at Ketchum, near here. Then she called Chuck Atkinson, a family friend, and asked him to put out a statement that the creator of “Farewell to Arms,” “The Old Man and the Sea” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls” was dead.

South Carolina Region OKs New Flood Maps For First Time In Years Island Packet (Hilton Head, SC) Mar. 11 Port Royal is updating its 35-year-old flood maps to comply with federal policy, and the changes will mean fewer residents will be required to buy flood insurance for their home. The Port Royal Town Council unanimously approved changes Wednesday to its flood maps and building requirements to make sure they conform to the Federal Emergency Management Agency s recent update of its maps and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources model ordinances. The maps will go into effect March 23. According to the new maps, 1,840 properties in the town no longer will be required to have flood insurance, as they won t be considered part of special flood hazard areas high-risk tracts where homes with federally backed mortgages must be insured against flooding. Beaufort County plans Bluffton library renovation, New Riverside branch Bluffton Today The Beaufort County Library System has two major projects planned for Bluffton scheduled to begin this spring: a renovation of the Bluffton Branch Library and site assessments for a new library branch proposed for the burgeoning New Riverside area. About 60 percent of the Bluffton Branch Library will get an overhaul starting in March, the county said this week. Work at the library, located at 120 Palmetto Way, includes relocating and expanding the children s area and adding a large room dedicated to children’s programs.  The main fiction section for adults will assume the space of the former children’s area, the library system’s website says. The teen area will be relocated and enhanced. Community meeting rooms will be created from previously open spaces. New furniture, flooring, and paint are included.
