The Serpent has captivated audiences with viewers tuning in to see how serial killer Charles Sobhraj was finally caught after committing countless murders on Thailand s so-called hippie trail in the 1970s. Jenna Coleman has a starring role as his accomplice, playing Monique - real name Marie-Andrée Leclerc - who often lured victims to serial killer Charles.

Now, Tahar has opened up on how difficult he found to “get in” to Charles’s character, instead, trying a different tactic.
Speaking of Charles, Tahar confessed: “It’s a very complicated character to portray, it s easier to get out of a character, sometimes than to get in.
“I remember I struggled the two first weeks, it was hard for me to, to capture him to understand him.
Delving further into what he found difficult, he explained: “Because, how can you possibly be real, and in a way, truthful, when you have to portray those type of people.
If you binged The Serpent like the rest of the UK, you will have rightly been horrified by the actions of Charles Sobhraj and his accomplices – to the point that it seems almost inconceivable that someone would be able to do this to so many people and actually get away with it in real life. However, whilst the storyline of the series is accurate to what happened, it’s interesting to see whether the real people that came into contact with Charles Sobrhaj were portrayed accurately.
So, from Charles himself to Herman Knippenberg and his wife Angela, let’s compare the real people with The Serpent cast that portrayed them onscreen.
In the spring of 1975, Sobhraj met Canadian medical secretary Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman).
Leclerc soon became his main accomplice in many of his scams but had denied being aware of any killings.
In July 1976 in New Delhi, Sobhraj and Leclerc alongside Barbara Smith and Mary Ellen Eather tricked a group of French students into accepting them as tour guides.
Sobhraj then drugged the group, which took effect faster than anticipated and when some of the students realised what was happening to their peers, they overpowered Sobhraj and called the police.
Two years later, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison in India alongside Leclerc.
