areas and backed up and started making a larger sequence until we were able to determine pretty much conclusively the whole breakup sequence of the airplane. we have giant pile of evidence that leads directly to the initial event being this explosion within the fuel tank. the tank is big, 20 x 20 and four to six feet high. the bottom tank is supposed to be perfectly flat. the pieces we recovered on this airplane have a definite bow on it. they were pushed out. if you go above the tank in the same spot, you go above it, it s push upwards into the cabin. whatever happened, happened inside the tank. we know the center fuel tank exploded. that s a fact. the question was from the day that we together said the center fuel tank blew up, three or four months out, what caused it to blow up? so ntsb is looking at wiring,
the fbi and other investigators were simultaneously investigating the missile and the bomb theory. the bottom line is, everything was centered around the center fuel tank because that s where they knew the catastrophic event took place. they just didn t know what set off the center fuel tank, a bomb, missile or mechanical failure. my name is jim wildly and in the investigation, i was the chairman of a group formed to determine how and why the airplane broke apart. it is unusual to reconstruct an airplane to this degree. this is the biggest jigsaw puzzle i ve been involved with. we looked at differences of fire and soot patterns to determine which fractures came first and which damage to the areas came first and used that in little areas and backed up and started making a larger sequence until we were able to determine pretty much conclusively the whole breakup sequence of the airplane.
correspondent joins me now to sift through some of the more credible theories here. i want to get to the size and the dimensions one more time. we have to try to understand this. while we don t know what it is, are those dimensions within range of it being a piece of the plane? it s pretty big to be a chunk of a plane. the long direction, almost 100 feet. that s the distance from home plate to first base. it s a good throw. on the other hand, the wing is about that. the wingspan of a 777 is 200 feet. right. one wing, that would match up. a wing, by the way, is something that didn t have fuel in it and might not have because they were running off the center fuel tank, would float. there s a glimmer of hope for the investigation, not hope for the families. it s sad news for the families, but it could be a piece of this plane. you don t know until you get there. some time is going to go by.
