simulator, surely it will be interesting to see they ve now said some files were deleted from that a month ago. whether those were just ordinary delusions or if they can recover them from the hard drive, there s something incriminating there. that would solve a lot if they found something incriminating there. you ve covered so many of these terrible disasters over the years. can you recall another case where families had to wait this long for any kind of information as to what happened? well, families have had to wait a long time before, but not for more sound information than we have right now. in other words, oftentimes it s a question like in the twa crash off long island, was it a missile or a bomb, or as it later turned out to be, was it a mechanical problem, an explosion of the center fuel tank. so families had to wait a long time for those kind of answers, but at least they knew where the plane was, that it had gone
any credibility stepping forward to take responsibility for bringing it down. and that s one of the shocking things. everyone keeps saying gosh, if someone did this why are they not taking credit. in the case of the flight, it was something went horribly and shockingly wrong. conspiracy theories are still out there about that plane. this was an extraordinary investigation. it took months and costs tens of millions of dollars for them to gather all the pieces. they did something they ve never done before. they took the pieces and put a large section of the plane back together. that piece of the reassembled plane is still in a hangar outside of washington, d.c. i ve seen it. i ve been inside of it. i ve been inside the center fuel tank where they believe that the explosion happened. and at the end of the investigation, they were able to determine that it was because something as simple and as
was less than an hour into its flight. cruising at altitude when it suddenly nose dived into the atlantic with no distress call. eventually u.s. and egyptian investigators came to two different conclusions. the ntsb said a co-pilot intentionally crashed the plane. the egyptians cited mechanical failure. even when there are witnesses to a plane crash, there can be mystery and controversy. and twa 800 is proof of that. upwards of 1500 people say they saw some kind of fire trail in the sky july 17th, 1996 leading to speculation it was a missile and terrorism that brought down the 747, killing 237 people. former abc correspondent pierre salinger fed the flames of conspiracy in correctly claiming it was a u.s. navy ship that shot the plane down. it was pain staking work by investigators who concluded an explosion to the plane s center fuel tank was the real culprit. in some airline mysteries, it s
flew through huge thunderstorms. in 19 nierngs an egypt air 767 from jfk to cairo went don t in the atlantic 60 miles off of nantucket. investigations showed one of the pilots flew right into the ocean on purpose. he reportedly had mental problems. others thought he may have killed himself and all on board as an act of terrorism. and, of course, in july of 1996, twa flight 800 broke off from jvg to paris. hundreds of people thought they saw a missile hit the blaerngs an exhaustive federal investigation concluded a spark likely ignited fumes in the empty center fuel tank. in 2008, luckily not over the ocean, in a runway in heathrow, this triple 7 crashed when the engine kompgd out. investigators say frozen ice cast crystals were the cause. they ordered corrections. that was the first major incident involving a boeing 777.
