Records show that Wakefield was jailed for the abduction and attempted forced marriage of a teenage girl, and he faced criticism during his lifetime for his mistreatment of Māori.

Nearly two-thirds of Dunedin residents think public consultation is lacking at the Dunedin City Council, the latest Dunedin Residents Opinion Survey says.
More parking, being more environmentally friendly and improving roading infrastructure were top priorities, in a survey of Dunedin residents.

Central city parking, traffic flows and a lack of council transparency were other issues raised in the latest survey of more than 1300 residents views.
While overall satisfaction with the city increased from 52 percent to 54 percent, satisfaction about value for money decreased from 46 percent to 42 percent.
Parking satisfaction in the central city remained low at 20 percent, alongside satisfaction with roading infrastructure which fell from 35 percent to 30 percent.
