BURTON, MI – A man who shot and killed an on-duty Burton police officer in the 80s when he was 16 years old will no longer serve a life sentence.
Shane Patrick Richey, now 54 years old, was resentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison with credit for time served by Genesee Circuit Judge Celeste D. Bell Wednesday, April 28. Richey has credit for nearly 38 years already served in prison.
Criminal jury trials in Genesee County Circuit Court on hold until April 28

The new delay will push the restart of criminal jury trials back to the end of April.
Circuit Court judges met Wednesday, March 10 to discuss when trials could realistically resume, landing on April 28 as the next tentative start date, Circuit Court Administrator Barbara Menear said.
Jury trials had been set to restart March 2, but after COVID-19 cases rose in the county, the date was tentatively pushed back to March 10.

It is “not realistic” to continue delaying trials week to week while coordinating jurors and planning operations, Menear told MLive-The Flint Journal. The Circuit Court must work with the State Court Administrative Office guidelines when determining when to reopen courts for criminal trials.

GENESEE COUNTY, MI Criminal jury trials in Genesee County Circuit Court scheduled to restart this week have been delayed until at least Wednesday, March 10 after Genesee County saw a spike in COVID-19 cases.
Chief Judge Duncan Beagle told MLive-The Flint Journal on Tuesday, March 2 the date jury trials were due to restart following a Feb. 26 announcement about the latest delay.
Genesee County now has a seven-day average positivity rate above of 5% on coronavirus diagnostic tests after it saw a surge in both coronavirus case numbers and positivity rates. It had 359 cases in the seven days compared to 164 the previous week, a 119% jump.
