In the summer of 1972, a young man boarded a plane, leaving his homeland for a dream halfway around the world. My father was 23 and following his mother’s wishes that he come to America to seek a better life for himself.
Having recently graduated from an engineering college in India, he found it difficult to find work in the small fishing village he grew up in or the big city of Mumbai. His oldest brother had immigrated to the United States years prior and my grandmother thought this country would provide him opportunity that the place he was born into could not at the time.
