Mayor Daniel Reiman said that according to municipal records from the Board of Health, the dogs were not registered with the town, as is required by law. Both dogs were euthanized after the attack. As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor, he said. We pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief.
Neighbors said that the dogs were allowed to roam free in the neighborhood, and one said they didn t let their own children play outside as a result.

A 3-year-old boy died after being attacked by dogs outside a New Jersey home on Tuesday, officials said following a preliminary investigation.
Authorities responded to a residence on Laurel Street in Carteret, Middlesex County, at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a report about a dog attack. An initial probe suggested the boy was killed and his mother left seriously injured following an attack by two dogs.
Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman said in a statement on Tuesday the victims were airlifted to hospital. The names of the victims were not released by the mayor or law enforcement, and the breed of dogs involved had not been clarified at time of writing.

CARTERET, NJ The community of Carteret is in deep mourning after a three-year-old boy was killed by a pair of pit bulls Tuesday afternoon, and his mother was badly injured in the attack as well. She remains hospitalized.

CARTERET, NJ A 75-year-old died in a Carteret house fire Tuesday, a spokesman for the town confirmed to Patch.
The fire broke out at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday in a small home on the 100 block of Lowell Street in Carteret, said the Middlesex County prosecutor.
Firefighters entered the home and pulled a 75-year-old man out to safety, but he later died from smoke inhalation, said Carteret spokesman Jon Salonis.

The man has been identified as Mark Levinzon, who lived in the home. He was unresponsive when firefighters pulled him out.
The exact cause of death remains undetermined pending the completion of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner s Office. Also, what caused the fire has not been released.
