The fire broke out at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday in a small home on the 100 block of Lowell Street in Carteret, said the Middlesex County prosecutor. Firefighters entered the home and pulled a 75-year-old man out to safety, but he later died from smoke inhalation, said Carteret spokesman Jon Salonis.
