reporter: durbin and other democrats say keep medicare and social security as-is. now, if the two sides can t agree on entitlements there is no way to the goal of $4 trillion over a decade. eric? eric: it will take a while before they get to an agreement and they talk about cuts and how about raising taxes. reporter: republicans say no way. not in the down economy and, some of the democrats say, that is exactly what you will have to do. and graham spoke about this, this morning: no one on the republican side is going to vote to raise taxes but i think many of us would look at flattening the tax code, do away with deductions and exemptions and take the revenue to help pay off the debt. reporter: he pointed this jaw dropper, for every dollar spent in washington the government borrows 40 cents, primarily from china, eric. eric: that is astounding and an ongoing issue and we ll stay on it throughout the hour, caroline shivley, thank you.
