Point Reyes National Seashore on Thursday announced the temporary closure of Drakes Beach to protect the area’s northern elephant seals during their winter pupping season.
The south-facing beach will remain closed as the 4-ton pinnipeds leave the water to rest and mate a period known as “hauling out.” Visitors are still welcome to watch the scene from the beach’s parking lot, park officials said.
