New Delhi: An Empowered Group of Officers under Niti Aayog Member for Health, Dr V K Paul have recommended extraordinary measures to ramp up oxygen provision under a Plan B to meet a surge of 6 lakh new COVID cases a day.
The report submitted about 10 days back (just days before the country saw several deaths due to lack of oxygen) group had told authorities, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), to take immediate measures for oxygen provision to meet a surge of 3 lakh new cases a day by April 20, and a surge of 5 lakh new cases a day by end of April.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that a case of criminal negligence should be filed against the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government, and it should be prosecuted for not setting up eight oxygen plants in the city.

After four patients reportedly died within minutes at a hospital in Tamil Nadu s Vellore, family members claimed oxygen shortage as the primary reason for their deaths.
The family members of the patients alleged that oxygen shortage in a ward at the hospital began at around 2 pm but nothing was done by the staffs even after repeatedly informing them .
District Collector Shanmugasundaram, however, said that the four patients died due to various reasons and had nothing to do with oxygen supply . He also said that 121 patients at the hospital were dependent on oxygen supply and they are doing well.
