Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate says she experienced some unpleasant incidents following the council s vote on Thursday (file photo).
The debate over Māori wards in Hamilton is threatening to fracture the council as some city politicians push to revisit the issue. In a rare move, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate and five councillors are seeking to revoke a council decision preventing the introduction of Māori wards in time for the 2022 election. Council last week voted eight to four to postpone making a call on the issue – triggering the immediate resignation of Hēmi Rau, one of the council’s five Māngai Māori.

A crowd gathers for Hamilton City Council s launch of He Pou Manawa Ora – Pillars of Wellbeing. The Captain Hamilton statue was hastily removed by the council following threats by a Waikato kaumātua, Taitimu Maipi, to tear down the life-sized monument during a weekend Black Lives Matter march last year. Maipi attacked the statue using a claw hammer and red paint in 2018, arguing Hamilton was a “murderous a..hole”. Southgate said He Pou Manawa Ora will guide how the city acknowledges and celebrates its history and expects “cultural hurts” to be explored and discussed. He Pou Manawa Ora would have helped frame council’s decision-making when the Captain Hamilton statue was first offered to the city by the Gallagher Group, the mayor said.
