A crowd gathers for Hamilton City Council's launch of He Pou Manawa Ora – Pillars of Wellbeing.
The Captain Hamilton statue was hastily removed by the council following threats by a Waikato kaumātua, Taitimu Maipi, to tear down the life-sized monument during a weekend Black Lives Matter march last year.
Maipi attacked the statue using a claw hammer and red paint in 2018, arguing Hamilton was a “murderous a..hole”.
Southgate said He Pou Manawa Ora will guide how the city acknowledges and celebrates its history and expects “cultural hurts” to be explored and discussed.
He Pou Manawa Ora would have helped frame council’s decision-making when the Captain Hamilton statue was first offered to the city by the Gallagher Group, the mayor said.
