Māori ward u-turn splits Hamilton politicians

The debate over Māori wards in Hamilton is threatening to fracture the council as some city politicians push to revisit the issue.
In a rare move, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate​ and five councillors are seeking to revoke a council decision preventing the introduction of Māori wards in time for the 2022 election.
Council last week voted eight to four to postpone making a call on the issue – triggering the immediate resignation of Hēmi Rau,​ one of the council’s five Māngai Māori.
