Cape Cod Healthcare held unpublished COVID vaccine clinic for patients

HYANNIS – Diane and Lucien Poyant of Hyannisport didn’t know there was a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the grounds of the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis until they drove past it Monday. After calling a number at Cape Cod Healthcare, which is hosting the clinic, they got an appointment for Tuesday morning and joined a long line of cars snaking down Scudder Avenue past the West End Rotary. The Poyants, both 83, said they were thrilled and relieved to stumble upon the opportunity to get their first shots.  “We’ve been trying everything CVS and all that stuff,” Lucien said. “We can’t thank (Cape Cod Healthcare) enough.”

Cape Cod hospitals are treating a record number of COVID-19 patients

Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals are filled nearly to capacity as a record number of COVID-19 patients strains the local health care system, Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael K. Lauf said Wednesday. Coronavirus cases surged to 71 between Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Falmouth Hospital on Tuesday the most ever, Lauf said. As of Wednesday, the hospitals had a total of 66 patients with coronavirus.  That is 20 more patients than were hospitalized in Hyannis and Falmouth on April 21 during a spring pandemic peak, according to state Department of Public Health statistics. “COVID has come back with a vengeance,” Lauf said. “Our hospitals are busier today than we’ve ever been in the history of Cape Cod Healthcare.”
