Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals are filled nearly to capacity as a record number of COVID-19 patients strains the local health care system, Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael K. Lauf said Wednesday.
Coronavirus cases surged to 71 between Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Falmouth Hospital on Tuesday — the most ever, Lauf said.
As of Wednesday, the hospitals had a total of 66 patients with coronavirus.
That is 20 more patients than were hospitalized in Hyannis and Falmouth on April 21 during a spring pandemic peak, according to state Department of Public Health statistics.
“COVID has come back with a vengeance,” Lauf said. “Our hospitals are busier today than we’ve ever been in the history of Cape Cod Healthcare.”
