yosemite national park has been closed to the public here tonight. thanks for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 8. i m noelle bellow and i m dan thorn. of course, again, yosemite national park. only part of it has been closed to the public. but right now officials are still investigating what sparked this blaze. fire crews are using air units to douse the flames from above and ground teams are working to wrap giant sequoia trees with protective foil to prevent them from catching fire. maderas babb has more from yosemite national park. i m standing inside of the park near the mayor opposed grow. were there some of the largest trees in the world behind me, you can see the flames and the smoke from the washburn fire today. fire crews working on containing the blaze that threatens some of the largest giant sequoias in the world. the mayor opposed to grove is one of the most visited spots in yosemite national park with 500 giant sequoias standing tome. it s some of the oldest
forecasted for the next few days are a major concern. so obviously with the higher temperatures that is going to increase a fire behavior and intensity of fire, the flames broke out on thursday prompting evacuations by friday afternoon. the community of will want to the campground will want a campground the golf course there. highway 41 on the south entrance coming from fresno has a hard closure to the rest of the park is still open and be a highway. one, 40 firefighters say one of the initial challenges was getting resources. there is fire in northern california resources kind of held out that fire is wrapping up. so we are starting to get those resources and obviously it is in an area where it is getting into wilderness. so it is getting into steep country as far as these giant sequoias are known for surviving fire. but wildfires burn hotter and quicker than ever before because of dry conditions. the sequoia trees are a fire, adapted tree so they actually need fire to repro

when fun time from the bay area s local news station. you re watching kron. 4 news. now at 9 developing news out of orange county tonight, one person is dead and 5 others are injured after a gunman opens fire inside of a church. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 9. i m dan thor and i m noelle bellow. this shooting happened earlier this afternoon during a banquet following sunday church service. investigators say they have detained an asian man in his 60 s. the 5 people shot are all being described as for asian men and an asian woman all in their late 60 s to early 90 s. carlos saucedo has the latest details. we know multiple patients were transported to area hospitals. 2 of the victims are brought here to providence mission hospital in mission viejo. they were brought here in critical condition. the gunfire erupted inside geneva presbyterian church in laguna woods just before one 30 this afternoon about 30 to 40 people were inside during
handguns and opened fire. deputies now calling some members of the congregation heroes after they sprang into action to take the shooter down. based on the preliminary investigation and the it does seem that one or more of the congregants to down quite heroically and jumped in. i m trying to do what they get to subdue to subdue the suspect immediately. dispatch call came in at about one. 26 pm. deputies were here within minutes and by the time we arrived the parishioners had the subject hog tied and in custody. so this happened really quickly. deputies have only describe the suspect as an asian man in his 60 s. they say the suspect likely does not live in the area. governor gavin newsom s office tweeting out about the church shooting this afternoon saying in part no one should have to fear going to their place of worship. and senator dianne feinstein also weighing in tonight. she tweeted sad and so angry to hear of another mass shooting this afternoon in orange county
