Footy fans and players will rejoice as senior rugby league finally makes its return to Coast fields following an 18-month wait on the sidelines. Despite best efforts, Rugby League Sunshine Coast was forced to cancel last year s senior competitions as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. While Beerwah managed to slip into a Brisbane competition and still hit the field, the rest of the clubs were left to call it a year. Having not played since August 2019, clubs will lace up to get their 2021 campaigns underway this weekend. The
DRAW The draw is out with the first round to be played solely on Saturday this week out of respect for the Maroochydore Swans, who will gather to farewell player Dale Best.
New Caloundra head coach Leigh de Jersey said it was great to take out the competition in what was a “pretty crazy” final.
“It was all about getting each other playing for each other and little bit of fun before the season starts,” he said.
“We well and truly know it doesn’t mean much towards the season itself because a lot of players didn’t play.
“But, it was a great confidence boost and was great for morale.” Sharks senior player Ben Marshall in 2018.
However, de Jersey said success was bittersweet after their hooker and captain Ben Marshall suffered a devastating season-ending injury.
I ve always wanted to play and I ve watched all my cousins, dad and brother play growing up, Mitchell said. I ve always been around the touch footy and oztag scene so I just thought why not give it a go. She said her first year in the sport was amazing. It was a new team so there was a lot of girls that were new to it, so that was good for me so I didn t feel so left out, Mitchell said. And we actually went on to win the comp so it was a pretty amazing year. She said the squad was looking forward to getting on the field.
