david scott. effries. so here s the thing you can see the tally chart on the right-hand side. we are making sure everybody has voted. we believe the magic number is 217. as you see right there kevin mccarthy has 216. when they start another roll call we will go back to that immediately but in the meantime let s bring in our chief congressional correspondent chad pergram chad do we appear to be one vote short. that s right. this is why it always takes a while at the end because you have the tellers, the tally clerks in front of the chamber they are going through manually and comparing notes and making sure that everybody has the same numbers. let me do a deep dive right now. so this is where we stand. okay. so remember that the speaker must win an outright majority of all members casting ballots for somebody by their last name. okay? so the present votes do not count. the present votes do not count. so if you laura: chad can we pause? because i think we have matt g
reporter: all of these options are thorny. if they go to another round of balloting, it s not clear i would be surprised if mccarthy were able to peel off the number of people that he needs from this 20 no vote coalition on his side to actually become speaker on this next ballot. what we are hearing is that the mccarthy team could go for a motion to adjourn until tomorrow. you are right, that would buy them time. it would save them another round of embarrassment if he were to lose on this fourth ballot. as i was walking over here, i tried to find some key members of that 20 no vote coalition to ask if they would support that motion to adjourn. right now, democrats have said they will not represent republicans do that. they are whipping against that motion. republicans would have to go it alone. they would not be able to pass that motion to adjourn unless some of these 20 republicans were also on board and supportive of it. i talked, for example, with congressman andy bigg
inflation. take a look and i agree s with what chairman paul said last week that theeek number one threat is the strengthon in strength that we build is inflation. look, i know you ve got to be frustrating. no, i can taste it for inflation and it s going to take any responsibility or policy. i think our policy is to helppde nots hurt. think about think about what they say the vast majority of the of the of the economist think that this is going to be a real tough problem to solve. but it s not because of spending screaming at the tv. how have they helped joe now since joe has clearly lost any ability to communicate becauseog of this cognitive decline? allow me to m trye to translate for him. there s no plan to curb inflation, by the way. it s notay transitory either. there s no plan to lower gas prices, is no plan to spur on economic growth or as bloomberg reported, quote, inside the administration there is a sense of frustration, doom and some say magical thinking about
He is not only focused on one thing. I dont know anybody thats done more to highlight and talk about the border disaster that is underway right now as we speak. I had the privilege of serving here when jeh johnson was secretary of homeland security. I have a very high opinion of jeh johnson. I think he is one of the finest Public Servants i ever met. He was asked on one occasion to define what was a crisis on the southern border. He said any time you have more than 1,000 illegal entries a day, you have a crisis. We have 10 or 11 times that every single day. In that tide of humanity thats coming across, there is a boatload of fentanyl coming to kill Tens Of Thousands of all of our constituents. There are Human Traffickers who are taking advantage of young men and young women and, frankly, predators in our own country, and they are bringing them across, not by the tens or 20s or dozens, but by the hundreds and the thousands. There are amongst that flow of people, people that wish us ill,
